Why Personal Finance Is More Like Healthcare Than Social Media

The short answer: There is rarely one "right" answer.

‍

Spend a few minutes on social media, and you'll hear statements like:

● "Always choose Roth."

● "Always max out your Roth IRA."

● "A Roth IRA is better than a 401(k)."

● "Never contribute pre-tax."

The problem?

Those statements might be right for someone.

But they are not right for everyone.

That's because personal finance is exactly that: personal.

‍

Think about healthcare for a moment.

Imagine two people walk into a doctor's office.

They both have the same symptom.

Would they automatically receive the same treatment?

Probably not.A doctor would ask questions.

Things like:

● How old are you?

● What medications do you take?

● What's your health history?

● What are your long-term goals?

Those answers matter.

The same is true for retirement planning.

‍

Two people with the same income may need completely different strategies.

Even if two people both earn $150,000 a year, their financial decisions may look very different. Because they may have different:

● Tax situations

● Family circumstances

● Employer benefits

● Retirement goals

● Future income expectations

‍

That's why blanket statements can be misleading.

Education and advice are notthe same thing.

Education helps you understand your choices.

Advice helps you decide which choice may be right for your situation.

Both are valuable.

But they are not interchangeable.

‍

Be cautious about one-size-fits-all financial advice.

Social media can be a great place to learn new concepts.

But it's not designed to understand your unique circumstances.

When someone says:

"Always choose Roth."

You should ask:

For whom?

Because the answer might not be you.

A better question to ask is:

"How does this apply to my situation?"

That question can change everything.

Especially when decisions involve taxes.

‍

The choices you make today may affect:

● Your taxes now

● Your taxes in retirement

● Your savings strategy

● Your future flexibility

‍

That's why tax decisions should always be discussed with your CPA, tax advisor and/or financial professional.

Whatthis really means for you

When it comes to retirement planning, there isn't a single strategy that works for everyone.

It's easy to hear advice from friends, coworkers, social media, or even AI tools and assume that what worked for someone else should work for you, too. In reality, every person's situation is different.

Your goals, income, family needs, career path, and timeline for retirement are unique. Yourfinancial decisions should reflect that.

The goal isn't to copy someone else's strategy. The goal is to understand your options so you can make informed decisions that align with your own life and long-term goals.

The "best" financial decision isn't universal. What may be the right choice for one person may not be the right choice for another.

And that's not a problem. That's exactly how financial planning is supposed to work.

The more you understand your options, the more confident you can feel about the decisions you'remaking
